Hunting in Northwest
Ontario With Timber Edge Camps
The fall season is an excellent time of the year to roam the
hundreds of miles of logging roads in the area for ruffed
and spruce grouse. Waterfowl abound in the many bays and small
lakes in the area.
We also offer baited or spot and
stalk fall bear hunts in one of our 3 bear management areas.
We place our baits to take advantage of a fall blueberry crop.
The baiting starts in May and continues throughout the summer
for fall hunts.
In 9 years of bear hunting the average weekly
bear sightings per hunter is 8 and as high as 16 for one of
our hunters. Overall our bears have averaged 210 lbs. dressed
(250 lbs. live). In 2007 we averaged 289 lbs. dressed (344
lbs. live) with the largest being 421 dressed, 501 lbs. live.
In 2008 we averaged 244 lbs. dressed (290 lbs. live) with
the largest 340 lbs. dressed (405 lbs. live). In 2008 the
only hunter to not take a bear home saw 10 during his week
of hunting and shot the first night. No hunter has ever left
camp without taking at least one shot at a bear in their week
of hunting. In 2009 bears averaged 263 dressed, 313 live.
8 of 10 hunters took bears home with them. The largest a new
camp record of 430lbs dressed, 512 live, and 1st to qualify
for the Boone & Crockett record book with a 21& 3/8" score.
We have also acquired another 200sq km bear management area
for 2010.
